Abandon All Hope

In case you missed it over the weekend:

Hussein Link to 9/11 Lingers in Many Minds

Nearing the second anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, seven in 10 Americans continue to believe that Iraq's Saddam Hussein had a role in the attacks, even though the Bush administration and congressional investigators say they have no evidence of this.

Part of the 70% is 32-year-old teacher (a teacher for chrissakes!) Kim Morrison:

From what we've heard from the media, it seems like what they feel is that Saddam and the whole al Qaeda thing are connected.

Juan Cole sums things up nicely today:

Although eccentric billionnaire reactionaries like Rupert Murdoch and Richard Mellon Scaife have managed to bamboozle 69% of Americans into believing that Saddam had something to do with September 11, he did not. And any informed person knows he did not.

This is what happens when you pay your teachers poorly.

JD: Regarding the Dumb Posse, let's roll. I ain't no pacifist.

Dack, hell yeah! I'm no pacifist either. This crap is absolutely more of a threat to our country than Hussein was (maybe even in the first Gulf war).

Dack, all of that weightlifting has gone to your head. Simmer down before you get hurt.

What is it about Americans? The one's I know here in Japan seem to have a certain degree of intelligence, but I keep reading these staggering poll results. There must be something in the water.
All you informed Yanks out there - don't give up!
Grab a stranger off the street today, tie him up, and feed him the truth.

Is this so surprising given that the White House kept insisting that this was the case?

"Saddam Hussein has longstanding, direct and continuing ties to terrorist networks. Senior members of Iraqi intelligence and al Qaeda have met at least eight times since the early 1990s. Iraq has sent bomb-making and document forgery experts to work with al Qaeda. Iraq has also provided al Qaeda with chemical and biological weapons training. And an al Qaeda operative was sent to Iraq several times in the late 1990s for help in acquiring poisons and gases. We also know that Iraq is harboring a terrorist network headed by a senior al Qaeda terrorist planner. This network runs a poison and explosive training camp in northeast Iraq, and many of its leaders are known to be in Baghdad." President Bush Feb 8th 2003
